Pope Leo XIV has called for an immediate ceasefire in the Middle East as the death toll across the region continues to rise.
“For two weeks, the people of the Middle East have been suffering the horrific violence of war. Thousands of innocent people have been killed, and many others forced to abandon their homes,” the Pontiff said.
Delivering his address on Sunday, March 15, 2026, at St. Peter’s Square in Vatican City, the Holy Father lamented the loss of civilian lives and the destruction caused by the fighting.
“I renew my prayer and closeness to all those who have lost their loved ones in attacks that have struck schools, hospitals, and residential areas,” he said.
The Pope also expressed concern about the situation in Lebanon, describing it as a matter of “great concern,” and urged peaceful dialogue to help the country’s authorities implement lasting solutions to the crisis.
He added that, in the name of Christians in the Middle East and all people of goodwill, he was appealing to those responsible for the conflict to agree to a ceasefire and reopen dialogue aimed at restoring peace in the region.
