Security agencies in Ghana’s Upper West Region have intercepted a significant consignment of suspected illicit drugs and explosives at the Babile Inland Checkpoint, following a coordinated intelligence-led operation.

According to a statement issued by the Ghana Immigration Service, the operation took place on Monday, March 23, 2026, when officers on duty stopped a Hyundai truck with registration number AC-1426-22.

The vehicle was reportedly traveling from Kumasi in the Ashanti Region toward Hamile in the Upper West Region.

The interception was based on intelligence gathered by immigration officials, leading to the discovery of suspicious cargo concealed among legitimate goods.

A joint inspection conducted on March 26, 2026, involving the Ghana Immigration Service, Ghana Police Service, Narcotics Control Commission, and the Ghana Revenue Authority uncovered a range of prohibited items.

The seized materials included 20 detonating devices, multiple sacks of suspected Tanubyn dynamite, and large quantities of tramadol branded as “Royal Tramol Kings” and “Royal Tramal King,” each reportedly containing 225mg doses.

Authorities say the items were carefully hidden beneath non-contraband goods in an apparent attempt to evade detection.

Officials commended the vigilance and professionalism of personnel at the checkpoint, noting that attempts to outsmart officers, including alleged inducements, were unsuccessful.

A senior immigration official, Justice Bosomtwi-Ayensu, indicated that a full-scale investigation is underway to identify and apprehend all individuals connected to the smuggling operation.

Security agencies have urged residents of the Upper West Region to remain calm but vigilant, emphasizing the importance of public cooperation in combating crime.

Authorities also reaffirmed their commitment to inter-agency collaboration and community engagement as key strategies in maintaining regional security.

The statement further stressed that security personnel will not tolerate any obstruction in the discharge of their duties, underscoring a firm stance against criminal activities.

The Ghana Immigration Service expressed appreciation to the media and the public for their continued support, calling for sustained partnership in the fight against crime.
