Tamale Metropolitan Assembly to Launch Phase Three of Decongestion Exercise

  • Tamale Metropolitan Assembly to Launch Phase Three of Decongestion Exercise

The Tamale Metropolitan Assembly has announced plans to initiate its third decongestion exercise aimed at alleviating traffic congestion and enhancing sanitation within the metropolis. The exercise will be led by Metropolitan Chief Executive Hon. Adam Abubakari Takoro and is scheduled to commence in the coming days.

This initiative follows two previous decongestion efforts conducted in July and November 2025, since Hon. Takoro assumed office as mayor. He has assured residents that this third phase will be sustained and more effective, emphasizing the city’s ongoing commitment to urban development and public health.

During a broadcast on Radio Tamale’s Bugum Beni drive with Fuseinin Safianu, Hon. Takoro underscored the importance of collaboration between the assembly and the regional police command to ensure the exercise’s success. He called on traders and residents to cooperate fully with the enforcement task force, which will be actively involved in implementing traffic and sanitation regulations.

This exercise is vital for the continued development of Tamale. We are dedicated to maintaining order and creating a clean and safe environment for all residents, Hon. Takoro stated.

He reiterated that this would be the third decongestion initiative since his assumption of office, highlighting its significance for the city’s growth.

The regional police command will deploy a specialized task force, known as “Red Maria,” responsible for patrols and the apprehension of offenders. Traders found selling on bicycle lines or engaging in other activities that obstruct traffic will be subject to arrest and processed for court prosecution.

Hon. Takoro also addressed efforts to regulate tricycle operations, which have been identified as a major contributor to traffic congestion. He revealed that the assembly is engaging two private security firms to supplement existing enforcement teams, particularly targeting drivers who stop at unauthorized locations, thereby reducing unnecessary traffic buildup.

Furthermore, the mayor expressed concern over sanitation issues impacting Tamale. He warned that individuals engaging in open defecation will be prosecuted under sanitation laws and face sanctions aimed at promoting environmental cleanliness.

Hon. Takoro urged residents to support the ongoing decongestion efforts and work collectively toward transforming Tamale into a more organized and hygienic city. The exercise is expected to continue in the coming days, with authorities calling on the public to adhere to regulations to facilitate the city’s sustainable development.
