Karaga, Ghana: The Member of Parliament for Karaga Constituency, Dr. Mohammed Amin Adam, has called on the Minister for the Interior, Muntaka Mubarak, to reconsider the current curfew imposed on Karaga following recent chieftaincy disturbances.

In a press statement issued on Thursday, Dr. Amin Adam commended the Interior Minister for what he described as a “proactive intervention” that has helped restore calm to the area after tensions linked to chieftaincy disputes.

He acknowledged that the swift response by security agencies has significantly contributed to stabilizing the situation.

However, the lawmaker expressed concern over the continued enforcement of curfew hours, noting that the restrictions are having unintended economic consequences for residents, particularly traders who depend on night-time business activities for their livelihoods.

“The current curfew hours are adversely affecting peace-loving and law-abiding citizens,” he stated, emphasizing that many local traders are experiencing hardship as a result of limited trading hours.

Dr. Amin Adam appealed to the Interior Ministry to conduct a fresh assessment of the security situation with a view to either easing or completely lifting the curfew.

According to him, such a move would help alleviate the economic strain on residents while maintaining stability in the area.

He further expressed confidence in the capacity of security personnel deployed to Karaga, suggesting that their presence alone could deter any individuals or groups seeking to disrupt the peace.

The MP also used the opportunity to call on residents to uphold peace and refrain from actions that could reignite tensions.

He urged community members to channel their efforts into productive ventures aimed at improving livelihoods and reducing deprivation.

The curfew was initially imposed as part of government efforts to contain unrest stemming from chieftaincy disagreements, a recurring issue in parts of northern Ghana.

While relative calm has returned, discussions around balancing security with economic activity continue to dominate public discourse in the affected communities.

Authorities are yet to officially respond to the latest appeal, but stakeholders are hopeful that a review of the restrictions could provide much-needed relief to residents while sustaining the fragile peace.
