In a significant boost to poultry farming and food security in the Savannah region, the European Union (EU), in collaboration with the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), has supported the “Nkuko Nkitinkiti” initiative with the distribution of 150,000 birds in Gbugun, North East Gonja District.

The initiative, part of the government’s Feed Ghana Programme, aims to promote backyard poultry farming and encourage households across selected districts to engage in poultry production.

The launch was held at Gbugun, where Minister of Food and Agriculture Hon. Eric Opoku emphasized the importance of the project in enhancing food security and livelihoods.

A total of 500 beneficiaries were selected for the current phase of the programme. Each beneficiary received 50 birds along with two bags of feed to support their poultry farming activities. The birds were inspected and treated to prevent infections before distribution.

Minister Opoku explained that the birds are expected to start laying eggs within a month, providing quick returns for the farmers. The beneficiaries will own both the birds and the eggs produced, empowering them economically.

The Minister assured that veterinary officers would be available to assist farmers with animal health challenges, ensuring the proper management of the birds and minimizing losses. Prior to receiving the birds, beneficiaries underwent training on poultry management, including proper housing, feeding, safety, and biosecurity measures.

In her remarks, FAO Ghana Representative, Priya Gujadhur urged farmers to take good care of their birds and to adhere to the best practices learned during training to ensure healthy and productive poultry.

During the event, MP for Salaga North, Hon. Alhassan Mumuni, appealed to the Minister of Agriculture and development partners to establish a rice processing factory in North East Gonja District to add value to the local rice production.

He also called for the supply of motorbikes to agricultural extension officers to facilitate their work, offering to partner with the District Chief Executive (DCE) for fuel support for the officers.

Beneficiaries expressed happiness and commitment to making the most of the opportunity, promising to support their livelihoods through effective poultry farming.

The Minister further announced plans to support existing poultry farmers nationwide with loans in the form of around 4 million birds to expand production, signaling a continued commitment to boosting the poultry sector and ensuring food security in Ghana.
